The first ever digital movie theater with DCP playback capability in the Sri Lankan university system at Trincomalee Campus ceremonially opened for the students on 18th August, 2023 at 1.30. The construction of movie theatre was funded by the World Bank project (Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD Operation). Department of Languages and Communication Studies initiated and won this competitive project in 2018 in the first round itself. The seating capacity of it is approximately 130. Total cost was for the movie theatre is 34 million.
This can be considered as an enormous landmark in the history of Department of Languages and Communication Studies and Trincomalee Campus. The movie theater will be a contributing study-center for film screening for entire students of the Trincomalee Campus and it functions as a hub for academic and research-oriented discussions. The movie theatre will help to provide students with an opportunity to engage with films and other creative productions and explore is educational potentials.
The students-centered activities such as film screenings, discussions, film competitions, film festivals are scheduled for the students every semester. We have started students centered activities such film script writing, short film productions, documentary productions, other creative productions to practice OBE-LCT in teaching, learning, and assessments.
This will be open the avenues for our undergraduates who are passionate of working a film industry. In near future, the movie theater will be opened for the publics as well.
